SQUEEGEE MOVES

Residual Ink

Even when you think there’s nothing left in the screen after printing, there is. It can be soft and subtle and wonderful.

MATERIALS

  1. You need the residual ink left on the screen after printing. This works best when you start with dark and highly saturated ink color.

  2. The softer, more absorbent the paper here the better. Arches 88 really does capture the most information, especially important with this process.

PROCESS

  1. You can try this process by creating marks on the screen expressly for this purpose or by printing any residue left in the screen after general printing. I find it’s particularly successful after making irregular shapes, marks, or textures on the screen.

  2. If you only want to capture the residue, use proofing paper first until you have what you want on the screen. No need to waste good paper.

  3. To get the softest, subtlest marks, print with the squeegee dry. There should be no ink on the blade and any excess ink on the screen should be removed or well out of the way. You will have very little time to take these prints. Act fast or the ink will dry and you’ll get little to nothing on the paper!

ADVANCED MOVES

  1. Adding transparent base to the screen will reveal far more information than printing it dry. It’s a much more saturated image - which is good or bad depending on what you’re going for.

  • 1/3 The residual ink created an almost atmospheric effect.

  • 2/3 You can see the ghostly evidence of an irregular shape from earlier printing.

  • 3/3 Some tiny bits of ink got on the squeegee when printing the residue, creating much darker marks at the same time.
